Limericks + Heretics = Limereticks

Thursday, November 21

Had Irenaeus of Lyon known about limericks when he was constructing his literary attack against the heresies of his day, I believe he would have used them. It's hard to counter-attack someone when they're speaking in rhyme.

Furthermore it has the added benefit of softening the blow of your accusations. Who could be offended by a simple light-hearted AABBA construction! Perhaps even today's modern theological controversies would be better handled through comic verse. So listen up John Macarthur! Perhaps your cessationist cause would be strengthened by a bit of limmerick? And you, Rachel Held Evans! if you would only employ a poem or two in your battle against complimentarianism! Imagine the impact it would have!?

So here's to more limericks in our arguments.

Marcionism

Marcion for the Church was quite onerous,
for he thought that God was incongruous
He developed a theory
which seemed good, but not really
proved wrong by Tertullian and Irenaeus.

Montanism

At first the Montanists seemed friendly
just with added prophetical frenzy
but their eschatology was odd
They claimed voices from God
So were denied orthodoxical entry

Nestorianism

Nestorius knew Christ was the Saviour
but believed in distinct hypostatia
But St. Cyril said no
so the man had to go
but his teachings have spread all through Asia

Apollinarianism

Apollinaris of Laodicea
His theology was novel and queer
That Christ was a bloke
with God’s mind was a joke
Distorted by Arianist Fear
